The Vauxhall Society has objected to the application for planning permission to build a 32-storey skyscraper of 572 student apartments overlooking Vauxhall Park. So too have the Friends of Vauxhall Park. Nice though it would be to have the swimming pool promised for 30-60 South Lambeth Road, the skyscraper is so big and so tall that, as the developers admit, it would shade Vauxhall Park.
This application, like the consultation before it, is not the first to be dogged by dodgy photographs. This time, they exaggerate the size of the park, shrink the height of the skyscraper and present the shading as coming from the other side of the park.
When, during the consultation, it was pointed out that 600 or so students and their guests would give such a small park a right hammering, Downing Property Services’ representative replied ‘Students? Never- they’ll be in bed most of the day’.
Officially, your comments on the application had to be made to Lambeth’s Planners by 18 January, but so beset by property developers are the planners that you have until at least 1 February and maybe even longer than that.
