Vauxhall Gyratory: no two ways about it

4 March 2011

For years The Vauxhall Society has opposed the one-way traffic gyratory traffic system, and only recently Chris Cossey has described it as a ‘denial of local amenity and comfort for pedestrians’ landing Vauxhall Cross with ‘a totally harsh environment for everyone who lives or works there or who uses the area other than in a vehicle’. Yet many people new to Vauxhall have never known anything else but the gyratory. What’s wrong with it? we asked Chris. Chris Cossey...

Kylun scheme and Viva Vauxhall: a response

22 February 2011

Danny Walsh has responded to a Vauxhall Society news story about the Kylun scheme. He says: Very biased journalism here.  I do feel that the committee should be monitoring very closely what is being said out there in the wider community in the name of Viva Vauxhall.  Here’s some examples:  No ‘Viva!’ from Viva Vauxhall Viva Vauxhall, a residents’ association neighbouring Vauxhall Park, held a general meeting on 24 January from which came an ‘overwhelming’ vote for a change of...

CLS’s ‘Linear Walk’: making the best of a bad TfL job?

CLS’s ‘Linear Walk’: making the best of a bad TfL job?

CLS Holdings are to be commended for their attempt to fit their ‘Vauxhall Square’ development plans into the ‘harsh environment of Vauxhall Cross’ says one visitor to CLS’s ‘Vauxhall Square’ exhibition, Vauxhall Society member Chris Cossey. But CLS’s proposed ‘linear walk’ over Vauxhall Bus Station is not the right answer, Chris adds. The right answer lies in the reluctant hands of Transport for London: get rid of Vauxhall’s ‘sordid’ one-way traffic gyratory so it’s safe for pedestrians to stay...

Kylun site visit as councillors waver

Kylun site visit as councillors waver

Lambeth Planning Committee is to carry out a site visit, possibly on Tuesday 15 March, before deciding whether the Kylun skyscrapers should be built on a traffic island at Vauxhall Cross. The Kylun planning application is meeting increasing opposition from community groups nearest the site, and is turning them against the whole Vauxhall Nine Elms & Battersea ‘Opportunity Area’. Kylun, like the neighbouring and now-rejected Octave Tower development, will shade Vauxhall Park. Yet Kylun’s developers have offered to compensate...

14 February 2011

It has been pointed out that these were left off the post http://vauxhallsociety.blogspot.com/2011/02/octave-tower-oversized-oversold-and.html We now suggest you email those same advisers, thank them, and say how pleased you are that the Minister has decided not to take the sunshine away from a lot of people who live within sight of but too often out of mind of Westminster and Whitehall  The email address of the Secretary of State for Communities & Local Government is: eric.pickles@communities.gsi.gov.uk It would be polite,...

Octave Tower: oversized, oversold – and overthrown

Octave Tower: oversized, oversold – and overthrown

At least one preening monument to corporate arrogance is not to glower over Vauxhall Cross, plunging Vauxhall Park into shadow. Eric Pickles, the Minister for Communities and Local Government, has ruled against a challenge by developers to Lambeth’s refusal of planning permission for the 42-storey ‘Octave Tower’ proposed for 69-71 Bondway. The Vauxhall Society helped objectors to lobby the Minister. We gave the names and email addresses of his advisers and other politicos. We suggested the argument that would...

Eric Pickles says No to Octave Tower

Campaigners against plans to build the Octave Tower at 69-71 Bondway, Vauxhall, London SW8 1SQ have claimed victory in the latest stage of the battle. Communities Secretary Eric Pickles has turned the planning application down. “The Secretary of State agrees with the Inspector’s recommendation. He hereby dismisses your client’s appeal and refuses planning permission.” However, the developers can now appeal to the High Court. 11-02-09 3 in 1 69-71 Bondway Vauxhall 212877

Libraries – the threat of closure remains…

Picture by Edith Holtham Saturday’s Save Our Libraries Day was a great success in terms of signatures gathered. Laura Swaffield of the Friends of Tate South Lambeth Library reports that nearly 800 signatures were gathered for the petition. However, the Durning Library remains under threat – and the deadline for that petition is Friday 11 February. Laura Swaffield says: “Friends of Tate South Lambeth Library turned out in a freezing wind on Saturday 5 February to support the hugely...
