NEWS UPDATE – OCTOBER 2012

This is just to make you aware that Community Trust Housing (CTH) have submitted their planning application for a new 21 storey mega block on Robsart street. This is in the face of a mass petition of opposition to the height, several private and two public meetings at which affected residents have expressed to CTH their opposition to the height proposed while welcoming the overall design and replacement of the existing Wayland House.

Objections are centred on the overbearing nature of the proposal, the overshadowing of the park and gardens and the fact that Lambeth’s policy on tall buildings excludes this site for tall buildings. Despite this it seems that Lambeth Planning will support the proposal. All are content that the height should be the 15/16 storeys agreed within the outline planning permission, which governs the redevelopment and new build throughout the Stockwell Park Estate and limits the total amenity impact.

There has been no support for the extra height proposed, which CTH want just to increase the number of high priced flats they can sell on the open market. We do not believe that this extra profit contribution is needed to fulfil the business plan CTH agreed with Lambeth at the time of the Stock Transfer, which rightly also limits the financial gains they can make at the expense of the community.

We are also concerned that if Lambeth shows that its tall buildings policy is not firm, other will follow in equally inappropriate areas and that erosion of scarce amenity will increase.
