The Vauxhall Society said this week that Val Shawcross is a pivotal figure in whether the Northern Line Extension is built and if so, where. Now, Ms Shawcross, Chairman of the Greater London Assembly Transport Committee, GLA member for Lambeth & Southwark – and running mate to Ken Livingstone in his bid for mayor – is to attend a public meeting here, as a Vauxhall Society affiliated residents’ association reports.
Martin Stanley of the Fentiman Road and Richborne Terrace Residents Association, writes:
I have heard today from Councillor Jane Edbrooke that your local Lambeth councillors intend to arrange a public meeting which will be attended by the GLA’s Val Shawcross, so as to ensure that residents’ views are understood by both the GLA and TfL.
The Tube Line, The Gyratory, Aircraft Noise & Bonnington Square
There are four inter-related issues of current interest in our neighbourhood.
1. ‘VNEB’ is the Vauxhall, Nine Elms and Battersea Development Area, including the new American Embassy and a large number of residential developments between Vauxhall and the Battersea Power Station.
2. ‘The Northern Line Extension’ (NLE) is a proposed extension of the Charing Cross branch of the Northern Line from Kennington through to near the Power Station via a new station at Sainsbury’s on the Wandsworth Road. Apart from the tunnelling (see below) the main question concerns the ‘Section 106 money’ that the developers will pay to the local authorities in return for being given planning permission. At present, this is all earmarked for the NLE, but some argue that this vital access to the VNEB should be paid for separately, by the landowners/developers, and the Section 106 money used to benefit the current local community rather more directly.
3. The proposed new tube line will pass under Fentiman Road, Usborne Mews and Richborne Terrace – probably near their junction with Carroun Road, but it is of course possible that the route will change so as to run underneath different houses. It is not yet clear how deep the line will be. There will also be visible ventilation shafts, but the nearest to us looks like being in/near Claylands Road.
4. Finally, there are tentative plans afoot to remove the Vauxhall Cross gyratory system, most likely so as to pedestrianise the area between the bus station and the apartments by the river. The remainder of the roads would be made two-way, and hence rather busier than they are now.
Meetings and exhibitions to discuss these issues are to be held as follows:
Public exhibitions re the NLE, are to be held on Friday 20 and Saturday 21 May from 10am to 6pm at The Long Room, The KIA Oval, Kennington, London SE11 5SS, and Thursday 26 and Friday 27 May from 10am to 6pm at Sainsbury’s Nine Elms, 62 Wandsworth Road, London SW8 2LF.
Meetings for those likely to be directly affected by tunneling under their property etc (but not open to other residents) are to be held on Monday 23 May at 7pm at the Ashmole Estate Tenants Hall, 2 Meadow Road SW8 1NB, and Wednesday 25 May at 7pm at the Wheatsheaf Community Centre, Wheatsheaf Lane, SW8 2UP.
All four of the above issues will be discussed at your Residents Association Annual General meeting on Wednesday 25 May at 8.30pm at the Ashmole Estate Tenants Hall, 2 Meadow Road, SW8 1NB. This meeting is open only to those who live in Fentiman Road, Usborne Mews, Richborne Terrace and Dorset Road. The Association will not be able to make representations to the council or developers unless there is a reasonably clear mandate from those attending this meeting.
