I’ve been alerted to your story about the Vauxhall Plaque.
I can confirm that when members of the Planning Committee had an early briefing about the Sainsbury’s Development I raised the issue of the link with their site and Vauxhall Motors and the looks from the developers suggested they hadn’t a clue about this and that it just sounded like a tall story. I suggested that the entrance to the new supermarket could have attractive tiled depictions of early Vauxhalls.
No doubt the new Tube station – which might be a fall-back position – will want depictions of Nine Elm trees!
Historical aside – I understand that the chassis of the first Vauxhalls were constructed in a basement and the wheels had to be left off so that they could winch them up to ground level through the available trap door. Another odd fact is that the trademark bonnet flutes on many Vauxhalls well into the 1950’s originated from a detail on a Company Director’s wardrobe.
