2017 is a momentous year in the 127-year history of Vauxhall Park. It’s in for a pounding like it’s never known. Just outside the park gates, accommodation for over 2,000 students is now planned, built or being built. A street or so away, gardenless skyscraper apartment blocks for many thousands more people are also springing up. Yet how many local people realise that the law does not require the park’s owners, cost-cutting Lambeth Council, to maintain an open space unless it can be shown that local people treasure it? Join Polly Freeman of the Friends of Vauxhall Park for a guided walk around this award-winning local treasure and find out what’s to be done to keep it that way.
